FTL vs. LTL Shipping: What’s the Difference?

Every shipping decision starts with the same question: what is the most efficient way to move this freight? 

For most shippers, the answer comes down to two options. Full truckload shipping, where your freight occupies the entire trailer, or less-than-truckload shipping, where your freight shares space with other shippers’ cargo. 

Both have a place in a well-run supply chain. Knowing which one fits your situation is where the real decision begins.

How Each Model Works

With full truckload shipping, a single shipper’s freight fills the trailer from origin to destination. The truck moves directly between the two points without stops, transfers or consolidation along the way. You are paying for the entire capacity of the vehicle regardless of whether you use all of it.

With less-than-truckload shipping, your freight occupies a portion of a trailer alongside cargo from other shippers. The carrier consolidates multiple loads, moves them through a hub and spoke network, and delivers each shipment to its respective destination. You pay only for the space your freight occupies, which makes it a cost-effective option when your volume does not justify a full trailer.

When FTL Is the Right Choice

Full truckload shipping is the stronger option in several situations, and understanding them helps you avoid paying a premium when it is not necessary.

Volume is the most straightforward trigger. If your shipment weighs more than around 15,000 pounds or fills more than roughly ten to twelve pallets, FTL typically becomes more cost-effective than LTL even accounting for the difference in base rates. At that volume, the per-unit economics shift in favor of booking the full trailer.

Speed matters too. Because FTL shipments move directly from origin to destination without intermediate stops or terminal handling, they tend to arrive faster and with more predictable transit times. If your freight is time-sensitive or your customer expects a tight delivery window, FTL reduces the variables that cause delays.

Freight that is fragile, high-value or requires careful handling is also better suited to FTL. Every additional touchpoint in an LTL network is an opportunity for damage. When your cargo moves in a single dedicated trailer without being transferred between terminals, the risk of damage drops significantly.

FTL also makes sense when your freight requires specific equipment, temperature control, or handling conditions that are difficult to guarantee in a shared environment.

When LTL Is the Right Choice

Less-than-truckload shipping exists to solve a specific problem: moving smaller freight volumes efficiently without absorbing the cost of unused trailer space. When the shoe fits, it fits well.

If your shipment falls below the volume thresholds where FTL becomes cost-effective, LTL is almost always the better option. Paying for a full trailer when you are only using a fraction of it is straightforward waste.

LTL networks also offer broad coverage and flexible scheduling that suits businesses shipping smaller volumes on a regular cadence. Regular pickups, established lanes and predictable pricing structures make LTL a practical foundation for ongoing distribution needs.

For businesses that ship frequently but in smaller quantities, LTL provides access to carrier infrastructure that would be difficult to replicate independently. The consolidation model absorbs the complexity of routing and scheduling, leaving the shipper to focus on the freight rather than the logistics.

The Cost Comparison

Pricing works differently across the two models, and the gap between them is not always what it appears on a surface comparison.

FTL pricing is based on a flat rate for the lane, typically calculated by distance and market conditions at the time of booking. The shipper pays for the truck regardless of how much of it they fill.

LTL pricing is based on freight class, weight, dimensions and the specific lanes involved. The carrier calculates a rate for the space and weight your freight represents within the consolidated load. Additional fees for liftgate service, inside delivery, residential stops and other accessorials can add up quickly if they are not accounted for upfront.

The practical takeaway is that LTL can look cheaper at first glance and still produce a higher total cost once accessorials are applied. Getting an accurate all-in comparison before committing to either option is worth the effort.

The Tradeoffs Worth Understanding

Neither model is without limitations. FTL comes with a higher base cost that is only justified at sufficient volume. Booking a full truck for a small shipment because it feels more reliable is an expensive way to manage risk.

LTL introduces more handling, longer transit times and greater variability in delivery windows. For freight that is time-sensitive, fragile or difficult to repackage after damage, those tradeoffs carry real consequences.

The shipper who understands both models makes better decisions across their entire operation, using FTL where speed, volume and handling requirements justify it and LTL where efficiency and cost control take priority.

The right choice between FTL and LTL is not a permanent one. It changes with shipment size, urgency, freight type and market conditions. Shippers who treat it as a fixed preference rather than a decision made load by load leave cost and service quality on the table.
